My Girls' Bedroom Makeover!!

Maddy & Mikayla have been long overdue for a bedroom makeover.  Maddy was comfortably sleeping in her twin bed since she was three, but my peanut Mikayla was sleeping in her crib/toddler day bed that she was quickly outgrowing!  For Christmas my Dad & my Step Mom Karen bought the girls the bunk beds that Mike & I had been looking at online for months.  All that we needed a few gallons of paint & a wide open weekend to work our decorating magic!

Here's some pictures of the girls room the day BEFORE we started...

Taking the room apart was a big job, unfortunately this alone took a half a day!  Mikayla's crib & Maddy's bed were the first to go, then the toys & art work.  Once the room was empty, we were ready to start painting!

Awesome!  After we finished painting it was time to start assembling the girls' bunk beds!

My biggest concern was the quality & condition of the beds, they arrived in 6 boxes.  Since we ordered online we relied heavily on customer reviews that were 95% positive.  Mike & I had searched locally but could never find anything we liked in style or finish that we wanted.  Since Mike managed a furniture store for 2 years, his approval was paramount.  When we opened the boxes we were pleased to find, how sturdy the beds were and that everything was in perfect condition.  Atlantic Furniture is definitely getting a positive review from us!

So here we are... AFTER...

Yes, the walls are still bare.  Mike & I are a little tired of the animal prints we framed 8 years ago when Maddy was on the way, I have some beautiful children's fairy prints stashed from our art gallery & picture framing days, so I think we'll be picking out some new mats & switching out a couple prints...  because of the bunk beds & the new bookcase we don't have as much wall space now anyway, so whatever we hang will have to be perfect.

Speaking of the new bookcase, I found this on clearance at target for $7.64 several months ago.  The finish matched our existing furniture perfectly.  It's not as sturdy as the bunk beds but, it's working out great.  Mike anchored it to the wall just in case Mikayla decides to climb it... I picked up a few canvas totes for storage.  Everything is organized and easy for the girls to use & put away.  Plus, there's still more room on the bookcase, which is great because my girls will surely accumulate MORE STUFF!

Mikayla's on the bottom, her bed is a snap to make & change sheets but Madelyn's top bed is going to be a pain in the butt.  Thankfully, my bar stools from the kitchen give me the height I need to reach it if I need to.  The comforters we chose are actually reversible.  I love all the colors together and it's hard to notice but a few of the pink flowers on the bottom of the comforter are satin.

I also found this cute collapsible hamper that matches the paint colors & bedding, we're actually using it for some of the girls stuffed dolls & animals...

Mikayla gets the bottom drawers, they are deep, long & wide!  A 1000% improvement over the hideous tiny three drawer chest she was using.  As seen here in the picture below... reorganizing was my biggest stress of re-doing the girls' room.  I have been storing bins of toys under their beds for years.  Since I was able to get rid of the crappy 3 drawer chest, I was able to stack all the toy bins neatly in the closet.

BEFORE...

AFTER...

Yes, their closet it packed FULL but at least the doors close to hide it all!  Overall there's a lot more floor space in the girls' room and it's MUCH less cluttered.  I packed up a few of Maddy & Mikayla's nick nack baby things that were just collecting dust and I have two whole bags of worn clothes & toys to donate or trash. I can't believe what a huge project this was, but everything looks great and the girls LOVE IT!  So... mission accomplished!

  1. I'll bet they can't wait to show off their room to their friends! Very nicely done, I'm jealous of the bunk beds!

  2. Their friends will see it today after school, at least there's a lot more room for them all to play now! You should talk Allison into getting bunk beds, think of all the room that would save in your master suite? LoL ;)
